Building Disney’s Descendants Costumes for a Family Halloween

Villains have families, too, you know.

That’s what the live-action Disney Channel movie, Descendants, is all about: in the kingdom of Auradon, the son and daughters of all the classic Disney’s villains are given a chance to redeem themselves. Allowed to attend high school with members of Disney royalty and other movie heroes, they need to decide whether they’ll follow their good sides, or try to help their villainous parents escape from the Isle of the Lost.

If you and your kids love everything Disney, then Descendants costumes are the perfect excuse to assemble some family fun on Halloween! Here are few ideas for family costumes and group costumes that we’ve come up with, using Descendants as inspiration.

Mal, daughter of Maleficent

As the daughter of the evil Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, as well as the live-action Maleficent movie from 2015, Mal is one of the main characters in Descendants. Her main costume definitely has its fair share of evil-looking flair, too.

The purple top with pink and green accents and matching leggings certainly has a punk rock, gothic look to them. Her jacket has an awesome print of a dragon inside of a black heart on the back. Black boots and a purple wig complete the outfit perfectly.

Mal also wears this coronation gown in the movie, which, with its lavender color and floral overlays, is a much more “Disney Princess” look.

Dressing the Rest of this Descendant’s Family

Mal’s mom is in the Descendants movie, too, with a brand new costume of her own. She has her trademark horns as always, but now wears a purple and magenta gown instead of a black one, for a little bit more of a mystical sorceress look.

As for the rest of the family, that’s where a little imagination comes in. The movie doesn’t elaborate, but perhaps dad can take on the role an evil, dark knight.

This black dragon costume for kids fits into the family as well – after all, Maleficent does transform into a giant dragon to fight Prince Phillip in the 1959 Disney classic. Plus, since it’s a hoodie (with scales, wings, claws, and a dragon tail, of course), it’s a great costume for boys and girls alike.

Evie, daughter of the Evil Queen

Evie is Mal’s best friend of the Isle of the Lost, and her number one companion as they attend school in Auradon along with the rest of the villains’ kids. Any combination of Evie and Mal costumes makes a great idea for best friends’ costumes on Halloween.

Plus, just like Mal, Evie has a couple of different outfits in the Descendants movie. On the Isle of the Lost, she’s the grunge to Mal’s goth, complete with combat boots, shredded black leggings, and skirt with graffiti and paint splatter print. Her costume also includes a jacket with a studded design in the shape of her mother’s crown.

Evie’s coronation gown is still dark blue, but with gorgeous flowing tulle and shimmer layers in place of distressed denim and worn fabric. Those boots have been swapped for a pair of elegant gold shoes as well.

Dressing the Rest of this Descendant’s Family

Fun fact of the day: the Evil Queen from Snow White is really named Queen Grimhilde. There are tons of options for dressing up like her, too. Wear her Disney costume from the original Snow White movie, or go for the more modern route with this look from Once Upon a Time. The former looks just like the classic cartoon – crown and all – while the latter features a more elaborate black dress with blue and violet ombre print and golden embellishments.

Suggestions for other family members include the hooded huntsman, who acted as the Evil Queen’s henchman in Snow White. Grim reapers and other scary demons also work with the theme quite well.

Audrey, daughter of Aurora and Prince Phillip

Villains aren’t the only characters in the movie, of course. A lot of the Disney princesses and their kids are in Descendants as well, and one of them is Audrey, Aurora’s daughter. We imagine there must be some heavy high school drama between her and Mal, since their moms didn’t exactly get along.

Audrey’s coronation costume is a classic pink, pleated dress with white satin details. A shimmering curve of silver sequins runs throughout the whole design to complete the look.

Aurora is a Disney princess who needs no introduction – she was Sleeping Beauty! Between her pink royal attire from the original movie, and her golden gown from Maleficent, there are plenty of Sleeping Beauty costumes to choose from.

As for Prince Phillip, he wasn’t just any Prince Charming. He was a brave and noble knight, riding into battle against Maleficent’s magic. A knight costume, combined with an enchanted shield and sword, is the perfect fit.

DIY Descendants Costume Ideas

Of course, not every character from Disney’s Descendants is a daughter (try saying that five times quickly). Jafar’s son, Jay, and Cruella de Vil’s son, Carlos, are big parts of the story, too. Here are a few quick costume ideas for Carlos costumes and Jay costumes that use some common items you may already have. Use them to let Carlos and Jay join your Descendants family costume this Halloween!

DIY Carlos Descendants Costume

To create our Carlos-inspired Halloween costume look, starting with a red jacket is one of the most important pieces. Finding a real leather jacket exactly like Carlos’ is tricky, but by layering different items, you can easily re-build his outfit. We used a red Thriller jacket, and added a thrifted white denim vest over the top. Then, wear an ordinary black T-shirt underneath the whole thing, splattered with some white paint (obviously, you’ll want to use an old shirt for this part!).

Black and white striped prisoner pants can be chopped in half to make Carlos’ shorts, along with some cut-off thin black costume pants underneath. Or, simply use some white or grey cargo shorts. Multiple belts, preferably studded, can be worn around the waist to replicate Carlos’ style, and a a furry raccoon tail hung from a wallet chain makes the perfect accessory. Combat boots and high black socks finish this DIY Descendants costume.

DIY Jay Descendants Costume

This Jay-inspired Descendants costume idea is even easier to pull off, since it uses a lot more pieces that are probably already in your child’s closet. A pair of ordinary old and worn jeans, for example, are perfect for a Jay costume. To make them look really authentic, you can sew or glue some zippers onto the left thigh – they don’t have to really work, it’s just cosmetic. Then, just use colors like yellow, burnt orange, and maroon in layers of T-shirts and hoodies, along with a red or maroon beanie hat, to complete the base costume.

Combat boots work for Jay’s boots, too, and we found that this pair of gloves looks a lot like the fingerless gloves that Jay wears. Accessorize the gloves even more with a few barbed wire bracelets or steampunk cuffs.
